It seems some celebrities just can’t get enough of the limelight. As well as being some of the biggest stars today to grace both the stage and the silver screen, these famous faces are making waves in the world of poker too. Who are the top 10 celebrity poker players? Here’s our list.
1. Kevin Hart
Hollywood funnyman Kevin Hart first cut his teeth in stand-up comedy, where he is known for his risqué routines. He still regularly has live audiences in stitches, but he’s also well known as an actor too. Some of his hit movies have included Get Hard, spy comedy Central Intelligence, Jumanji and Night School.
Now Hart is moving into poker, having been seen playing in the Bahamas. IT seems Hart sees gambling as another arena where people from all walks of life can come together and have fun. Just to prove he’s serious, Hart has since announced a partnership with Star.
2. Michael Phelps
Just how talented can one man be? Not only is Micahel Phelps is a world-famous athlete and proud owner of 23 Olympic Gold medals, but the swimmer is now making waves in poker too! It turns out that Phelps once shared a house in Baltimore with poker whizz Jeff Gross. It looks like the pupil has become the master now, as the Gross has been quoted as saying that Phelps is one of the best poker players in town!
Since Phelps has retired from professional swimming, he’s had more time to concentrate on gambling. He’s been seen competing tournaments in the sun-soaked Bahamas, as well as playing in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas.
3. Teddy Sheringham
Next on our list of the top 10 celebrity poker players is another footballer — the legend that is Teddy Sheringham. Sheringham played for Nottingham Forest, Spurs and Manchester United in his glittering professional football career, as well as representing England a massive 51 times.
Sheringham isn’t resting on his laurels now he’s retired though. He’s actually making a name for himself in poker with some big wins. As well as appearing in the World Series of Poker Europe main event and the WSOP itself, he came fifth out of 384 entrants in the European Poker Tour.
4. Neymar Jr.
Another footballer makes the list, but this time instead of a long-standing veteran of the sport, it’s relative newcomer Neymar Jr. The Brazilian forward currently plays football for Paris Saint-Germain but is also often seen playing poker.
Neymar is a prominent supporter of players like Felipe Ramos but has also come into his own as the face of online poker, and a contestant in the WSOP and EPT Barcelona.
5. Boris Becker
At number 5, we’re sticking with star athletes, but this time it’s tennis pro Boris Becker who’s come to our attention. Becker shot to fame as the youngest ever man to win at Wimbledon; now he’s winning at poker, playing in the WPT and Devilfish Cup.
Becker has kept his name in the papers thanks to his tumultuous love life — here’s hoping poker helps him rehabilitate his reputation.
6. Tobey Maguire
Speaking of bad reputations, Tobey Maguire is next on our list. Who could hate young Spiderman? Well no one, of course, but it turns out that Maguire is better known in the poker world as a cheapskate and a bit of a jerk to everyone he plays with.
Maguire was even reportedly one of the inspirations behind the real-life poker story detailed in the film Molly’s Game. Quick, someone cast him in another superhero flick!
7. James Woods
A slightly less controversial celebrity poker player is James Woods. The beloved actor has appeared in numerous TV shows and movies over the years and is well known for his role in classic movie Video Drome. More recently he played a hard-nosed attorney in legal drama Shark.
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Woods is also an enthusiastic poker player, as he often waxes lyrical about his love of the game on his social media channels. He’s not all talk either — you’ll often find him competing against fans in high stakes cash games.
8. Jennifer Tilly
Horror movie aficionados need no introduction to Jennifer Tilly. The actress is best known for her role as serial killer Tiffany Valentine in the Child’s Play franchise. She’s also popped up on TV, with appearances in Cheers and Frasier, and she’s a stalwart of the Broadway stage too.
Why’s she on our list? Because she’s also a great poker player of course! Tilly has even earned the distinction of being the only contemporary celebrity to have come in first at the WSOP: she won the Ladies Event in 2005.
9. Victoria Coren-Mitchell
Journalist and broadcaster Victoria Coren-Mitchell may be married to comedian David Mitchell, but she was a celebrity in her own right long before the pair even met. Building on her column in the Observer newspaper, in which she frequently mentioned her love of poker, she’s also made several appearances on comedy panel shows, such as Have I Got News For You?
Coren-Mitchell was the first woman to win an event on the European Poker Tour, and also the first to win two EPT main events too. She’s a well-respected poker commentator and has written several books on the subject too. You can find her gambling into the early hours at casinos around London.
10. Ben Affleck
We thought we’d end our list of celebrity poker players with arguably the biggest name of them all — veritable Hollywood megastar Ben Affleck. The Oscar-winner is known for movies such as Good Will Hunting, in which he starred with his best bud, Matt Damon; as a director, best famously for political thriller Argo; and as Jennifer Lopez’s ex-squeeze.
But he’s so much more than all that. He’s also known to be an excellent poker player! Although Affleck has made public appearances in some tournaments, he actually prefers to keep his hobby private, playing with fellow actors, producers and directors in private games with winnings running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now that’s what we call high stakes!
